Kids and Adults Learn to Play Tennis

Juniors Join Art Hobbs and His Coaching Team

From 11 - 1 on Sundays, Art Hobbs and his coaching team invite children and juniors to join loosely organised tennis activities. We have racquets and balls.  As there are 7 grass courts, and 2 hard courts, there will be plenty of room for other players to enjoy playing at the same time.

We look forward to having the young people join us.

Inspired by Others Kids Learn to Play Tennis

There is something magical about kids and tennis at South Cowichan Lawn Tennis Club (SCLTC). Inside this wondrous place of giant gnarled trees, and rows of nets inside high green fences, children learn to play tennis. Children rally (hit) the ball with each other and their coaches. After making good shots to escape 'aliens in space', they hop and jump with joy.

Inspired by each other, as well as by coaches, parents and grandparents, these kids are connecting with people of different generations, having fun, and making friends - in addition to getting great exercise and learning new skills. The other day, six year old Sam exclaimed "Wow! My Grandpa Don is playing real tennis over there"! Eight year old Sophia described a shot as being 'just like Nana Jean". An inspiring comment for all young players because Sophia is in her third lesson while Nana Jean Martin is ranked as the number one player representing Canada in an international tournament from September 12 - 18 in Umag Croatia. Jean will play both singles and doubles.

A parent shares that she is "excited for the day we can all play together". A grandparent notices "lots of fun out there on the court and that's what it's all about". Another grandparent comments that "kids are inspired by the other kids".

Junior Learn to Play Tennis Program

Our Learn to Play Tennis Program offers young tennis players structured, progressive and enjoyable learning activities that introduce and improve tennis skills and attitudes. The progressive tennis system uses court size, nets, racquets and balls that are scaled appropriately for the age and size of children.

We follow a curriculum developed by Tennis Canada and fully endorsed by the International Tennis Federation (ITF). This curriculum focuses on six positive aspects of playing tennis:

  • I can rally
  • I can play net
  • I can perform fundamentals for each stroke
  • I can start a point
  • I can play points
  • I am a good sport

We currently have over 50 children participating in our Learn to Play Tennis Program. Twenty of these children began their tennis lessons in the Learn to Play Tennis Program offered in the summers of 2015 and 2016 at SCLTC. The others have come to us through word of mouth.

Coach and Pro Art Hobbs leads a highly diverse and accomplished coaching team including youth from the community who have become Tennis Canada certified coaches.

  • Include all children with a wide range of physical, social and emotional abilities. For example, we have children with autism who are experiencing success in all areas of our tennis activities.
  • Encourage participation in a wide range of activities in support of overall children's physical, social and emotional development.
  • Foster children being good sports.
  • Invite and encourage parents to observe and support their children in their tennis lessons, and invite input and feedback from parents so that we ensure children have a positive learning experience.
  • Foster lifelong community tennis participation. Children have an opportunity to observe people of all ages enjoying and improving their tennis playing.

Thank you

We thank all students, parents and grandparents for their participation in these camps.
